OXIDIZE
Music: “Dear Kildear” and “The Canyon Wants to Hear C Sharp” by Andrew Bird
Choreography & performance: Christina Catanese
Performed at Pureenergy Studios as part of Nova Dance Company’s CHROMA – dances inspired by color in 2017
Rust is the color created when iron is exposed, over time, to oxygen and moisture, permanently changing it into a different form. Red rock or soil indicates the presence of iron molecules that are undergoing this transformation. Oxidize explores landscapes, geologic time, and color as the essence of place. It was originally developed during a month-long residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute, where as a part of a water rights cohort, Catanese developed new site-responsive choreography and visual art work in response to the complex New Mexico landscapes and river systems.
